VAMS International Conducting Institute
The VAMS International Conducting Institute offers an intensive, hands-on conducting experience in the heart of Italy’s Veneto region. Designed for emerging and advanced conductors, the program combines daily study with professional faculty, podium time with orchestras, and concerts in historic venues across Bassano del Grappa and Venice.
Program Overview
Participants work daily with conducting faculty in rehearsals, lessons, and seminars, refining technique, leadership, and interpretive insight. The program includes:
* One day with the Marco Polo Orchestra
* At least four days with the VAMS Orchestra
* A minimum of two hours of podium time with full orchestra
* Two concerts: one with each orchestra
* Additional opportunities for chamber conducting and ensemble work
* Cultural Immersion — Explore Bassano del Grappa, Asolo, Possagno, and Venice, including a guided visit to the Gypsotheca Antonio Canova, one of Italy’s most extraordinary artistic landmarks.
Faculty Mentorship
Participants receive individual attention and constant mentorship from our distinguished faculty — Roberto Zarpellon, Scott Terrell, and Tyler Austin — along with meetings and workshops led by guest faculty and visiting artists.
Topics include:
* Conducting mechanics and communication
* Score study and rehearsal preparation
* Contemporary music for conductors
* Music business, entrepreneurship, and professional development
Location
All rehearsals and lessons take place in Bassano del Grappa, with housing at the Istituto Scalabrini. The program culminates in Venice, where conductors lead final concerts featuring the VAMS Orchestra in iconic Venetian venues.
